The Bjork MoMA exhibit in New York City is a MUST SEE for all Bjork Fans.

Bjork Moma ExhibitI had the privilege of attending the Bjork exhibit, now showing at the Museum of Modern Art through June 7, and there is no doubt that Bjork fans will enjoy this special showcase. Many have criticized MoMA for its execution and for devoting such space to an exhibit like this, New York magazine calling it a “self-suicidal slide into a box-office-driven carnival”. Nonetheless, I feel if Bjork is not worthy of the description “modern art”, I really don’t know what is. To be fair, much of the exhibit would be over many non-fan’s heads, and it did beg for more material, but what it did include was excellent.

While the “Intruments” section of the exhibit located in the MoMA lobby was less than impressive, the main feature was quite beautiful. Titled “Songlines”, the installation brings the attendee through a series of rooms and passage ways each highlighting a different Bjork album. Complete with a fictional narrative audio tour, it allows you to connect with Bjork’s work on a different level. Her scribbled notebooks, original sheet music, old family photos, band instruments, amazing costumes (yes, the swan dress too), all make this a must see for the true fan. In the “Cinema” section of the exhibit, a MoMA commissioned video and song titled “Black Lake” topped off the experience (See the trailer for the video below).

While the show could have been more grand, as Bjork, herself, has been throughout her career, it wasn’t as “disastrous” as the critics have noted. Okay, it was short, but there is a full museum to visit after you get through the special exhibit! Hopefully, MoMA learns from some of the criticism it’s been dealt (this Hugfington Post article provides some good points), but I totally support the museum continuing with these musician-themed exhibits. I’m sure Radiohead would be interested ….
